MRO Art YARN

Welcome to MRO Art Yarn, where creativity, community, and compassion come together. Nestled within the heart of Moray Reach Out, our Art Yarn project is a shining example of how traditional skills and hands-on learning can transform lives.

Here, we don’t just create yarn, we create opportunities. Every strand of our unique, hand-spun wool reflects the time, care, and dedication of the amazing individuals who make it.

Our project offers adults with learning disabilities a safe, supportive, and inspiring space to learn, grow, and thrive. Through meaningful activity, our trainees build practical skills, boost their confidence, and experience the joy of creating something truly special.

Our Art Yarn project is not only about crafting, but about connection. We’re proud to be a supportive space where trainees, staff, and volunteers work together, share knowledge, and celebrate each other’s successes. Whether you’re a lifelong fibre artist or just starting out, you’ll always find a warm welcome and friendly advice here.

The Journey: From Fleece to Hank

Each skein of our Art Yarn begins with raw fleece generously donated by local farmers from across Scotland – from soft alpaca to traditional Shetland sheep wool. With the guidance of our skilled staff and volunteers, our trainees take this beautiful natural fibre through a full creative process.

The fleece is washed, teased, carded, and hand-spun, turning it from its raw state into unique, textured yarn. This hands-on journey helps our trainees build confidence and gain meaningful skills, while also offering a calming and therapeutic experience that supports mental wellbeing.

Adding a little extra magic, we’re lucky to have a wonderful volunteer who occasionally naturally dyes our finished yarn to give it a vibrant pop of colour. Using nature’s own palette – including onion skins, brambles, damson, turmeric, and nettles – the result is a collection of rich, earthy tones that make every skein even more special.

From start to finish, every twist of yarn tells a story of community, creativity, and care.

If you’re interested in donating raw fleece to support our project, we’d love to hear from you!
