Making the World Greener, One Upcycled Product at a Time: How Moray Reach Out Leads the Way

Hey there, eco-conscious folks! Today, we’re going to dive into the wonderful world of sustainability and how we are doing our part through our upcycling, recycling, and thrift shop projects. So, grab your favourite reusable coffee cup and let’s explore the importance of sustainability together.

Recycling with a Purpose at MRO

Moray Reach Out is all about creating opportunities for individuals who face challenges in participating in work and life. Our Buckie Recycling project is a perfect example of how we’re making the world a better place. In Buckie, we run our very own recycling centre by collecting cans and plastics from local businesses throughout Moray.  If you don’t already use our service, please contact us on info@morayreachout.org.uk for more details.

But what sets us apart? It’s not just about recycling, it’s about creating opportunities to help adults with disabilities gain a real sense of purpose and pride. Plus, our van collection service not only benefits the environment but also provides trainees with hands-on experience and allows them to get out into the community.

Recycling the Right Way at MRO Elgin

Elgin’s MRO Recycling project, are contracted by the Moray Council to staff and operate the plant, processing the cans and plastic collected from kerbside recycling. As we’re not just processing your cans and plastics; we’re contributing to both the environment and the community. We take cans, tins, and plastic containers and turn them into bales. But here’s the twist: the trainees are involved by picking out anything that shouldn’t be there. They are hugely proud of their part in the process and can tell you easily what should and should not be in your bin. So, next time you’re sorting your recycling and waste, remember that it’s more than just a bin; it’s an opportunity for growth and learning. The Thrifty Side of MRO

Now, let’s talk about our MRO Thrift Shop. This place is a treasure trove for sustainable shopping. From clothing to homewares, books, and children’s toys, you’ll find a range of second-hand items that have been lovingly sorted, organised, and labelled by our friendly MRO team. Plus, donated electrical items are tested by our qualified staff, so they are safe for onward sale.

But what’s really awesome about the Thrift Shop is the emphasis on quality and affordability. They love good quality clothing, accessories, linens, homewares, books, CDs, and toys. So, before donating, give your items a quick once-over. Ask yourself, “Will someone pay money for this?” If the answer is yes, it’s a perfect donation for MRO. It’s all about ensuring that donated items find new homes and don’t end up in landfills.

Empowering Lives Through Upcycling

Last but not least, Moray Reach Out’s upcycling project is a testament to the organisation’s commitment to empowering people who face challenges. We take discarded pallets and transform them into bespoke products for the home and garden. The process involves a lot of hard work, from easing the planks off the pallets to designing, sawing, sanding, and fixing them into wonderful new products.

Whether it’s seed boxes, red squirrel feeders, or outdoor play-kitchens, MRO’s upcycled products are not only environmentally friendly but also supports our mission of creating opportunities for those who need it the most.

In conclusion, Moray Reach Out is more than a charity; we’re a force for good, changing mindsets and creating a positive impact for future generations. We prove that sustainability and being eco-friendly can go hand in hand with creating opportunities and empowering lives. So, the next time you’re looking for a unique upcycled product or considering where to donate your pre-loved items, think of MRO and join us in making the world a greener, more compassionate place.
