Our History

Explore our journey through the years with photos, leaflets, & articles that capture where it all began.

In 2026, Moray Reach Out (MRO) will celebrate a remarkable milestone: 25 years as an incorporated Scottish charity, supporting adults with disabilities to live lives filled with purpose, pride, and belonging. Originally constituted as a Scottish charity 30 years ago and incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee 25 years ago, MRO has grown into a trusted and valued organisation at the heart of the Moray community.

To mark this moment, we are launching a year-long community campaign, The MRO Journey: Join the Circle of Giving, with a shared goal of raising £25,000 to secure and grow our future.

This campaign is about more than fundraising. It is about celebrating our journey, honouring the people who made it possible, and inviting our community to be part of the next chapter.

Our Story: How Moray Reach Out Began

Moray Reach Out’s journey began in 1996, when a group of parents and carers came together with a shared determination: to create better opportunities for adults with learning disabilities in Moray. From this vision, Buckie Yarns, a small haberdashery and wool shop, was born, providing meaningful activity, routine, and pride through real work.

In 2001, this growing vision was formally recognised when Moray Reach Out became an incorporated Scottish charity. Over the past 25 years, that initial idea has grown into a diverse organisation offering multiple projects, real work opportunities, and a strong sense of community for adults with disabilities across Moray.

Who We Are and Why We Matter

Moray Reach Out exists to empower adults with disabilities by helping them gain a genuine sense of purpose and pride. We do this by offering meaningful work opportunities in a safe, supportive environment where individuals can develop skills, confidence, and friendships.

Our trainees are not just participants; they are active contributors to the community.

Our Projects Include:

  • MRO Yarns & Crafts
  • MRO Woodwork
  • MRO Embroidery
  • MRO Recycling, Buckie & Elgin
  • MRO Thrift Shop
  • MRO Art Yarn

From handcrafted wooden items to high quality yarns and embroidery, every product created at MRO is made with care, commitment, and pride.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: focus on potential, not limitations. Much like a master craftsperson, we provide the tools, guidance, and environment needed to transform ability into achievement, benefiting not only the individual, but the whole community.

Social Media Support

There are many ways to be part of this campaign, whether through fundraising, participation, or simply sharing our message.

Not all support has to be financial. A Moment in My Journey is a simple, inclusive challenge designed for all ages and abilities.

How It Works:

  • Take a photo or short video of something meaningful to you:
      • A favourite place or view
      • A hobby you enjoy
      • A group picture/selfie
      • An event (wedding, birthday, retirement etc)
      • Something you are proud of or a personal achievement
  • Share it on social media (you can also share to the MRO Journey FB group)
  • Tag 2 friends to participate
  • Link our page to help raise awareness
  • Use the hashtags #MyJourney and #MROJourney

This challenge celebrates the individual journeys that make up our community. Each shared moment is like a single thread, unique on its own, but powerful when woven together.

The starting point for the next 25 years, representing our first supporters stepping forward.

Ring 2: Community Ring – £5,000
A powerful show of local support, demonstrating that Moray stands behind MRO.

Ring 3: Growth Ring – £12,500
The halfway mark, reflecting expanding opportunities and increased impact for trainees.

Ring 4: Future Ring – £18,000
Focused on sustainability, improvements, and future project development.

Ring 5: Celebration Circle – £25,000
