David’s Journey with Moray Reach Out
At Moray Reach Out, we believe everyone deserves the chance to feel valued, build confidence, and form meaningful connections through purposeful activity. When David moved to Moray, a transition that can be a big adjustment, we welcomed him with a 12-week supported work placement through our MRO Sponsorship Fund, helping him establish new routines and begin putting down roots in his new community.
Our General & Business Development Manager, Shona, shared how meaningful this opportunity has been:
“I am delighted that we were able to offer a work placement with Moray Reach Out to Dave to support his transition from the Borders to Moray. This was made possible through our MRO Sponsorship Fund, generously supported by NFU Mutual and, in the future, hopefully other organisations. It has helped Dave get a positive start in a new area, making new friends both within Moray Reach Out and beyond via the MRO Discos.”

Settling In & Finding His Place
David joined our Elgin Recycling project, where he quickly became a valued member of the team.
Kevin, Team Lead at Elgin Recycling, has seen first-hand how David has grown in confidence:
“Dave is feeling really happy. Initially, it was a bit daunting for him since he didn’t know anyone, but now he has made friends and learned about outdoor activities like disco nights and darts. He’s enjoying the process of making new friends. Within the MRO project, he enjoyed picking and the challenge of trying to get all the rubbish out. He works well, is polite and keen, and gets on with trainees and staff alike.”
Kevin added that if it were up to the team, they’d happily keep David on beyond his 12 weeks, a testament to how well he has fit in.
Our Operations Manager, Gemma, also praised his enthusiasm and knowledge:
“We wish him all the success in his future. His knowledge of recycling is fantastic and will hopefully help the public in his new town with their own recycling habits.”

Support That Extends Beyond the Workplace
The impact of David’s placement has reached beyond MRO. His sister, who helped him through his move, shared how the experience has boosted his confidence and provided much-needed structure:
She explained that she first found MRO on Facebook, and from the very first contact, “the team were extremely forthcoming and helpful.”
She went on to say, “It has been wonderful to see David build relationships so quickly. His confidence continues to grow every week. We are very grateful for the support, especially around the sponsorship that allowed him to attend. David has loved the work and getting to know his colleagues.”
While his social work support is still being transferred to Moray, the MRO Sponsorship Fund has filled a vital gap, ensuring David could keep developing his skills and relationships while waiting for longer-term funding to be arranged.

Community Generosity Making a Real Difference
This story wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of NFU Mutual, whose donation has allowed MRO to create opportunities like David’s.
Rhona, NFU Mutual’s Office Manager, shared how pleased the team were to see the real-life impact of their contribution:
“It’s wonderful to hear about the impact our donation has made for Moray Reach Out. We are all thrilled that it has made such a difference, allowing you to sponsor David. We would love the opportunity to visit again and meet both you and David.
Their support through the MRO Sponsorship Fund is helping create brighter futures and smoother transitions for people across Moray, showing just how powerful community partnerships can be.
Looking Ahead
Now that he has completed his placement with MRO, he has secured employment elsewhere that will continue to develop his skills.
We are very proud to have supported his first steps in Moray, helping him make friends, gain confidence, and feel part of his new community.
A Heartfelt Thank You
This placement has been a true collaboration between David and his family, our dedicated team, and the generosity of NFU Mutual. Together, we’ve shown what can happen when compassion and opportunity come together.
To everyone who contributes, shares, supports, and believes in the work we do – thank you.
Together, we are empowering lives, strengthening our community, and giving people the chance to shine.
